Performance PR

How PR and Affiliate Marketing Can Work Better Together

Editorial coverage is still earned, but affiliate strategy can help PR teams better understand how commerce publishers evaluate products.

The Partnership Playbook

The short version

  • Commerce editors consider affiliate availability, commission, inventory and conversion alongside the story itself.
  • Performance PR applies commercial intelligence to earned media. It is not pay to play.
  • When PR and affiliate align before outreach, conversion data sharpens pitching and coverage becomes easier to measure.

One of the biggest changes I have seen in partnership marketing is the growing overlap between PR and affiliate. Traditionally, they were managed as two completely different disciplines. PR built awareness and earned media, while affiliate focused on measurable sales, links, commissions and conversion.

In practice, the line between them has blurred.

Publishers still care about a strong story, a useful product and relevance to their audience. But many also care about whether the product is available through an affiliate network, how competitive the commission is, whether the landing page converts, whether inventory is reliable and whether there is enough demand to make the coverage economically worthwhile.

None of that means brands can buy their way into every article. It simply means the business model behind editorial commerce has changed, and PR strategy benefits from understanding it.

A great pitch can still lose on the fundamentals

A publicist can write a sharp pitch, reach the right editor and offer a genuinely compelling product. But if the product goes out of stock, the affiliate link breaks or the commission is far below comparable brands, the opportunity becomes harder to justify.

This is especially true for evergreen commerce content. An editor is not only asking whether a product belongs in a story today. They are considering whether the recommendation can continue serving readers and generating value over time.

PR cannot solve a weak commercial foundation, and affiliate cannot manufacture editorial relevance. When the teams share information, both sides are better positioned to do their jobs well.

PR brings the story. Affiliate brings the commercial infrastructure. The strongest programs need both.

Performance PR is not pay to play

There is a tendency to hear ‘performance PR’ and assume it means replacing earned media with sponsored content. That misses the point.

Performance PR applies commercial intelligence to the earned-media process. It considers what editors need, how publishers monetize, which stories drive action and what happens after coverage goes live. It uses affiliate data to make outreach smarter, then uses PR judgment to ensure the brand still has a meaningful story to tell.

Paid editorial opportunities can be part of the mix when they are transparent and strategically sound. But they should not replace genuine relationship-building, relevant pitching or strong product positioning.

The teams should be sharing more than a spreadsheet

PR and affiliate teams should align before outreach begins. Which products are priorities? Are they in stock? Is there a competitive offer? What claims can be supported? Which publishers already drive sales? Where has the brand earned coverage but failed to monetize it? Which articles rank and continue sending qualified traffic months later?

The affiliate team can identify partners with proven commercial impact and make sure tracking, rates and terms are ready. The PR team can shape the narrative, manage samples and understand the editorial context. Together, they can follow up after coverage goes live with both relationship care and actual performance insight.

That collaboration can also make reporting more useful. Affiliate links give the team a clear way to see which pieces of commerce coverage are driving traffic and sales, while the PR team can add context around the publication, story and relationship. Together, those inputs help the brand identify which products, messages and publications are resonating.

When PR and affiliate operate together, brands do more than add tracking to media coverage. They build a feedback loop. Editorial response sharpens positioning. Conversion data improves pitching. Publisher relationships become more strategic. The brand learns which products earn attention and which ones turn that attention into action.

PR brings the story. Affiliate brings the commercial infrastructure. The strongest programs need both.
